ERP selection matrix for India: Tally, ERPNext, Odoo, SAP Business One or custom

TallyPrime, ERPNext, Odoo and SAP Business One all handle Indian e-invoicing in some form; they differ in how they're licensed, where they run, and how far they bend to your process. A custom system fits the process exactly but has to be built. Score them against your own requirements, weighted by your priorities, not against a vendor's feature list.

How to use this matrix

Don't pick a system from a feature table, this one included. Every option below can be made to look good in a demo. Pick from your own requirements:

  1. Build your list with the requirements builder and set a priority on each line.
  2. Send the same Excel template to each option, one copy per vendor. It scores Yes, Partly and No against your priorities.
  3. Make each vendor do the demo tests for your Must lines. A yes you didn't see counts as partly.

The table below is for the first cut: which options to invite at all. Each fact is from the product's own documentation, linked under sources.

"Check it meets the rule" means the product's documentation we read doesn't say, in plain terms, that the edit log meets the audit-trail rule: a log of every change with its date that can't be disabled. Ask the vendor to show it.

When each one tends to fit

  • TallyPrime alone: accounting-led businesses whose operations fit in its inventory, and who mainly need GST done right. When it stops being enough is in seven signs you've outgrown Tally.
  • ERPNext or Odoo: businesses whose processes are close to the standard modules, with a partner or in-house developer to configure and maintain them.
  • SAP Business One: small businesses that want an established vendor and a partner-led implementation.
  • Custom: when the process is the business's edge, the standard modules force workarounds, or the system has to do something no package does (an IBR statutory folder from certificates, reel-level reservations, two companies on one ledger).

The longer comparison for manufacturers is Tally, ERPNext, Odoo or a custom ERP.

What the matrix leaves out

Price, deliberately: licence, implementation and maintenance costs change by edition, users and partner, and a number here would be wrong for most readers.
