Audit trail (edit log)
A record, kept by accounting software for every transaction, of each change made to the books and the date it was made, which the user cannot switch off.
Indian companies that keep their books in accounting software must use software with this feature for financial years from 1 April 2023, under the proviso to rule 3(1) of the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014, and their auditors report on it.
In an ERP it means more than a history tab: the old value, the new value, who changed it and when, for every entry, including those migrated from an older system. See the audit-trail requirement and GST, TDS and statutory compliance.
